Apex:
The area of a letterform where two lines meet as in A, M, W, V

Bleed:

Baseline:
The invisible line on which letterforms sit.

Branding
The process of defining and creating an alluring demonstratable distinctive-ness that customers are willing to pay a premium for.
At it’s core, branding strives to generate sustainable loyalty and affection with customers, employees & shareholders.

Closure:
This is a spontaneous human behaviour in which the brain completes an unfinished or unconnected shape.

Continuation:
The arrangement of forms so they are continuous from one element to another, leading the eye across space.

Design:
Designing is the process of looking for an showing off the similarities and differences inherent in the content of a visual message. This can sometimes take a good deal of time if the similarities do not immediately present themselves. But the search for similarities is at the heart of what a designer does.

Decender:
the part of lowercase letters that extend below the baseline in g, j, p, q, y.

Duotone:
A two-colour halftone, usually black and a second ink colour. The result is an image with more richness and depth than a one-colour halftone.

Margins:
These are spaces around the perimeter of a page.

Median:
The invisible line that defines the top of a lowercase letter that have no ascender. Also called mean line or waist line.

Perspective:
This is a technique for depicting volumes and spatial relationships on a flat surface.

Proximity:
The simplest way to achieve unity. Elements that are physically close together are seen as related. The further apart they are separated, the less they appear to be related.

Purism:
This refers to logic and order, universal truths, and hierarchy and sensation were the main tenets.

Readability:
This is a term that refers to the adequacy of an object to attract readers.

Repetition:
Any idea that is repeated provides unity. The repeated idea may be positioning, size, colour, or use of rules, background tints, and boxes.

Resolution:
The number of dots per inch (dpi) displayed on a screen or by a printer, which determines how smooth the curves and angles of charters appear. Higher resolutions yield smoother characters.

Sans Serif:
Type without cross strokes at the end of their limbs. Usually have consistent stroke weight.

Serif:
Type with especially thick serifs. Usually have variation in main character stroke weight.

Similarity:
Elements that share similarity of size, shape, colour, position or texture are seen as alike.

Style:
This is derived from the real needs of a client or of society.

Symmetrical:
This type of design balance centers on a vertical axis. Once divided in half (vertically) the design must have equal weight on both sides in order to be symmetrical.

Typography:
The art and craft of designing with type.
R. Hunter Middleton said, “Typography is the voice of the printed page. But typography is meaningless until seen by the human eye, translated into sound by the human brain, heard by the human ear, comprehended as thought and stored as memory.

Truism:
In design truism is that if you arrange the white space well, the elements on the page will look great, but if you arrange only the positive elements on the page, the white space will almost necessarily be ineffective.

Unity:
Unity in design exists when all the elements are in agreement. Elements are made to look like they belong together, not as though they happened to be placed randomly.

X-height:
The distance from the baseline to the median in lowercase letters. So named because it is the height of a lowercase x, which has neither an ascender nor a descender.

JOBS    -    ARTICLES    -    RESOURCES

1. What exactly does the group do ?
• designersCOUCH is a design club featured on deviantART. The club accepts members that are interested mostly in web design. However, we hope to expand in other areas of design such as logo design, prints, etc.

designersCOUCH is one of the largest and fastest growing design clubs on DA. This is achieved mainly because our members support and take part in club activities while the administration of the club strives to keep it active.

2. Can anyone join ?
• Anyone interested in “design” and as of now only designers into Web Designs, Logo Designs and Advertisment Designs are allowed to join the club considering you have at least 5 deviations in your gallery pertaining to any one of the mentioned galleries.

3. How do I become a member ?
• Simply submit a note with subject “Join” containing a link to your gallery and why you’d like to join designersCOUCH. Please note that your gallery must have at least 5 designs minimum pertaining to either the Web Interfaces gallery, Advertising gallery, Corporate gallery and/or Logo & Logotypes gallery. If you don’t have any, please do not submit an application to join until you reach the required amount.

4. Why is it an important prerequisite to have a minimum of 5 web designs for me to join the club ?
• Because so many deviants want to join just to be part of a club, this tends to create a problem when they are not active. designersCOUCH is a serious web design club and we're not hyped on about how many members are a part of it; what we're interested in is to expose members and their talent to the outside world however much we can.

5. Will my designs be used to profit the group ?
• Your designs are only submitted to the club to allow you to gain exposure and comments from members within the club and even those who might not be members. Your designs in no way benefit us except maybe to show the level of participation within the club.

6. Are there any competitions ?
• Yes, there are many competitions within the club for members.

7. If yes to 6 how do I enter ?
• As of now we have a monthly contest called “Featured Design”. Every month a poll is created whereby the best submitted designs are chosen for members to vote on. You can enter this simply by submitting your deviation via note with the subject being "Featured Submission" after the 20th day of every month. You can submit any type of design that resides in any of the categories dC accepts (advertising, web design, logos, etc). Once the winner is selected by the community, we place the winning featured design in our Featured Design panel on the front page for a month until our next winner is chosen. At the end of the year, all featured designs of that year will be taken up for the “Golden COUCH Award” nominations, where the annual featured design winner is chosen by the community and awarded. Respective award badges are provided to the winners to showcase it on their userpage/website/winning deviation, etc. as they like.

Featured Design Award badge Golden COUCH Award badge

Winning these contests doesn’t guarantee you a prize but in some cases you’re rewarded with deviantART Subscriptions, prints, etc.

8. Are there any set rules ?
• At this time there isn’t any set rules except that we expect members to treat each other with respect, make constructive comments and criticisms and make new friends.

9. Is there any chance of becoming an administrator starting as a member and giving to the community ?
• Yes, there is, once there’s an opening. In fact, many of our Administrators came on staff that way. If we see that an Administrator isn’t performing as they should we ask them to step down and choose someone we hope will get the job done.

10. How long has this been running ?
• Since Aug 19, 2005, 10:45 AM

11. Why isn't the founder of designersCOUCH an admin ?
• *keithar is the founder of *designerscouch. As time went on, he couldn't dedicate himself to the club and was less active on dA. So the other administrators took charge of the club to keep it running smoothly. The founder is currently a VIP until he decides to come back and help out.

12. How do I submit my design to the club ?
• Just send *designerscouch a note with the subject being "Submission" along with a link to your deviation. You have to be a member in order to submit designs to us, and your design must be a part of your deviantART gallery.

13. How many designs can I submit to the club ?
• Currently we accept 1 submission from each member per week. The week starts from Sunday and ends Saturday.

14. Can I submit graphics that are not web design but are still interface designs ?
• That depends, as of now designersCOUCH only accepts Web Interface designs, Advertising designs, Logo designs and Corporate designs (brochures, business cads, letterheads, etc). We’re hoping to expand into more categories/galleries in the near future.

15. Can I submit code to the club ?
• Yes, you can upload it on your server, send us a link and we’ll post it up for members. The same goes for any other material that might benefit the club. No links to porn, music, movies, software, cracks, etc. please.

16. Can I post articles to dC ?
• Yes, you can simply submit your article via note with subject “Article for Members”. We’ll post it as soon as the administrators review it. You can also post your article(s) via dC's Journal Forum. This is a faster process but does not guarantee everyone will read it. You can view the current articles link base here [link]

17. What is the designersCOUCH Deviousness Award ?
• To honour members who have taken a keen interest and how much they're active in the club and in the club's official chatroom, #designerscouch, we award them with the :star:designersCOUCH Deviousness Award:star:. The award is sometimes awarded along with gifts such as prints, dA subscriptions, etc. Also an award badge is provided for the deviousness award winner to use as they see fit.

18. What is this "Quality Control" at designersCOUCH ?
• We have a certain set of guidelines/standards so that the deviations submitted to dC ends up looking like a good quality website/logo/advertisment. The Quality Control (QC) policy we have makes sure members stick to quality rather than just a random doodle. You may ask why? It is because it helps the designer increase his/her design standards to industry level and perhaps even beyond. You can read the full article/tutorial here [link]

19. What does COUCH stand for ?
• COUCH stands for Community Of Unknown Creative Humans. The acronym was chosen from a winning suggestion from a contest held on dC’s official dAmn channel, #designerscouch, where ~nodethirtythree came up with the winning acronym.

Kind regards,
designers'COUCH Administration
