Closure:
This is a spontaneous human behaviour in which the brain completes an unfinished or unconnected shape.

Continuation:
The arrangement of forms so they are continuous from one element to another, leading the eye across space.

Design:

Style:
This is derived from the real needs of a client or of society.

Symmetrical:
This type of design balance centers on a vertical axis. Once divided in half (vertically) the design must have equal weight on both sides in order to be symmetrical.

Typography:
The art and craft of designing with type.
R. Hunter Middleton said, “Typography is the voice of the printed page. But typography is meaningless until seen by the human eye, translated into sound by the human brain, heard by the human ear, comprehended as thought and stored as memory.

Truism:
In design truism is that if you arrange the white space well, the elements on the page will look great, but if you arrange only the positive elements on the page, the white space will almost necessarily be ineffective.

Unity:
Unity in design exists when all the elements are in agreement. Elements are made to look like they belong together, not as though they happened to be placed randomly.

X-height:
The distance from the baseline to the median in lowercase letters. So named because it is the height of a lowercase x, which has neither an ascender nor a descender.

Members, Friends, Visitors

I'm happy to say work has finally begun on DC. The planning stage is completed and the goals are set. Light developments have begun but we should be going into the full swing of things in a week.

You're probably wondering when this will be completed. We'll this is still voluntary on most levels so it's hard to say. We did set some rules and are targeting DC's 3rd birthday. Hopefully we'll have beta up that will allow you guys to join and get the community going again.

A few other concerns you may have:
Will this take DC to a new level?
Yes, that's the intention. It'll give DC its own identity and allow for easier management. We still look to tightly integrate the community here at dA and on the new site because after-all, it is one community, there will be no difference except all the activities will be happening on our site.

What are some of the features?
Truthfully, we aren't offering anything special. I'm not going to lie to you. Our feature is the community driven spirt that exist at DC. That's what we have. But for those of you going, yea but what will we do on the site? Well, yes, you'll be able to submit your own work, and talk on forum which I know is something that's been trying to come alive on dA but is almost impossible. Beta stage will launch with the very basic features in which we'll build upon as we grow.

Do we have to re-join?
Yes. The application process is much more detailed and monitored so of the 700 members we currently have, about 60% is inactive so to have a fresh start, we hope you don't mind re-applying.

Will the requirements to join change?
No, not drastically. The premise will be the same but it'll be more closely monitored to ensure that the community is really 100% designers. Each designer we foresee falling into a category such as: aspiring designer, freelance designer and professional designer (no, these aren't defined categories).

What about management?
We'll be putting together a staff of volunteers to manage various areas of the website.

Do you have a design?
Yes, for those of you who remember, we did a contest about 2 years ago. In honour of the winner, we'll use the same design still to keep our word.

I'll contact those who said they can help with coding when necessary.

And that's all the FAQ I can think of at the moment.
Thanks.

Kind regards,

Members, Friends, Watchers,

Hey everyone. We just wanted to let you know what's happening in the background concerning DC.

THE FUTURE OF DC

A few of us (Ryan, Daran, George and Myself) met up on Skype to discuss where DC is heading and of course the main topic of discussion was the website. It was because it's the solution to many of our problems which we identified.

We decided that we've been too ambitious or to be more specific, I was (Damian). So we've scaled things back and decided to make the site much simpler and build upon it as we go and develop the community. However, this still involves a lot of work and when that's said, it makes you wonder, if simple is still much work, what the heck were we planning before? Well, sadly, you're not going to know anytime soon.

DC will be a project sponsored by Depthskins Design Studio primarily in terms of finance and skill set. However, ONE LAST TIME, I invite any of you that may know HTML/CSS to step forward and offer your help. How is it required you ask?

Well, we'll be using expressionengine.com to power DC. It's a CMS that's flexible and robust. It adheres to our design as oppose to the other way around. I believe taking a look at the site will give you an idea of how simple DC will be and what it will entail. The developer at Depthskins will be doing the design implementation and development. Where we need help is with html/css since there's a lot of unique pages, we'd appreciate this help. It will speed the process up and significantly decrease the financial burden Depthskins has undertaken as a small studio because I love DC so much :D

All you'll be required to do is clean, standard compliant html/css coding. We already have one volunteer but remember he's just that, a volunteer so time is limited.

Now, this isn't all talk (yea, I'm fed up of talking too) because since it's being done primarily by myself and team, it'll be much more reliable but no increase in time significantly (we still have client work). However, we've already discussed it and we're beginning to re-map things. We literally have to re-do everything, remove features and ideas we had and just completely scale back to work within the limitations of Expression Engine.

THINGS CURRENTLY

I'm sure you're wondering what about updates. Well, truth is, I really don't have the time submit anything myself, let alone accept and my circle of trust has been compromised. The people who are in that circle, are busy or busier than my themselves so that puts us all in a bad spot. But hey, let me know where you rather my time: work on DC's website or submitting work here? Seriously, let me know.

However, if you're into the interviews, expect more. We've got some really EXCITING ones coming up that we hope will inspire you to become better designers.

Thanks

Kind regards,
designers'COUCH Administration

Today we present to you an interview with Pat Queisler that we hope you'll find insightful. No, he's not Mr. Popular, no he hasn't gotten tons of faves but does that define a designer? Certainly not. What you see at someone's gallery on deviantART doesn't necessarily mean that's all they do. After all, Pat must be one of the few designers among us to work for Apple.

So feel free to read the interview:
[link]

About the Interview Program
The interview program is to help accomplish one of Designers'Couch primary goals, that is, to bring recognition to designers. It's meant to share the designers' story as a designer, their journey and what that person have accomplished. What's being looked for in your story is that you're passionate about design and have great love for it.

You're more than welcome to submit a note explaining why you feel you should be interviewed and what you have to share. Otherwise, it will be by invite.

Also note that this is not weekly, monthly or annually. It's randomly.
Thanks and enjoy.

A Community Restored

Dear dedicated members,

Firstly, I will identify myself and speak from a personal point of view. This is Damian (depthskins).

I'm appalled at what's happening at this community. Before you read any further, expect nothing but the blatant truth.

THE PROBLEM
Recently a series of events has occurred at DC that was disrespectful towards me. Yes, the community has been inactive but that gives no one the right to remove me without at least contacting me. It should be done differently, I would know, it happened before and I did it completely differently but not disrespecting anyone. Well, based on my second to last journal entries, certain parties assured me that they weren't aware of this and passed the blame to another member as the culprit behind this mutiny.

Sometimes I think I'm gullible. Even though a culprit has been identified, there's no certainty that the individual was actually the one behind this. Confusing? You have no idea because the blame is being bounced around with everyone claiming to help me.

However, I can't understand why it came to this. Every single journal entry I ask for help, what makes people think I wouldn't allow you to administrate? But here's the hardcore truth. Most just want to see their names under 'admin' and don't really understand the responsibilities. If someone can step up to the plate now and run this community more effectively than I can, not for a month or 2 but for a year, I'd gladly let you. But think about it: 500 notes consisting of applications and submissions. dA has no tool for mass upload. So it's not just about having your name under Admin.

THE TRUTH
For almost 24hrs, the account was under new administration and look what happened. Is this what you want? Exposure is one of DC's goals but it's not the ultimate goal. If you're part of DC solely because you wish to get pageviews, really, this isn't the place for you because DC has outgrown that. Think beyond page views. DC is a place that embraces people who truly care about their craft and who want to be at a professional level. My latest efforts was to turn this place into a professional environment. Obviously we're far from that. So if your reason for joining is for page views, quite frankly as community leader, I don't care to have you here. I would rather have 100 professional members as oppose to 700 members who will trow a hissy fit when things don't go their way. So with all the hours I personally put into DC, it's to execute this vision to establish a community of members that are serious about their craft.

THE SOLUTION

Point is this. I don't like to point fingers, what's done is done. The last journal entry on DC really annoyed me as it was used to send a message to a specific individual. DC is NOT for that purpose and I IWLL not condone such actions. The people who assumed Admin were kind enough to provide me with the login details. I thank you.

From here, we try to move forth and it seems like I now have to re-earn the respect of most, not for myself but for DC because I can tell you that some people just instantly removed their DC sigs and prepared to leave the community. This is how serious this is.

I promise you guys I never ONCE forgot about DC. Nor will I ever allow it to drift into the darkness. I did allow it to get inactive, many approached me to help, some I gave the password but I can't give every single soul and even so what I didn't want to happen, happened. However, I've seen something unique. I see that this community doesn't want to drift into the darkness. I've seen you want a voice and I will not ignore.

I just wanted to let the community know I'm back. Password is my personal password meaning NO one but me has it. I have to think things out and talk with some people I trust for advice to see what is the next best step. I will also carry out further investigations on what really happened. Clearly my trust is broken and will think twice before I give the password out again. The main objective is to get the activity status back up.

In closing, even though I will not completely take blame for this, I apologize. I apologize for the neglect, the inactivity. I am going to do better.

Forgive if my thoughts are all over the place but I really am shocked by all this.

Damian

* A little note for you guys, please DO NOT send in submissions more than once per week. Dear Members, Friends and Visitors,

I guess it's been a long overdue update from DC. A long overdue one. Well, it's here now and a lot to explain, to say.

Coming Directly from Damian:

Hey Guys,

Firstly, I'd like to thank ~nodethirtythree for helping to bring the updates back on track. I think you guys should how him some love.

Now onto more pressing topics. Where the hell have I been? Yes, I know. Well let me first express my most sincere apology for the neglect of the community over the past few months. It was not intentional. I was pressed with work since I was finishing up my final year at school and preparing for graduation and portfolio review. I think most of you can appreciate that my education comes first.

It doesn't mean I forgot or abandoned DC, not by a long shot. I hope you can understand the situation.

Now I finished school September, that leaves October so what have I been up to all this time. Well, during that time I was focusing on DC's future. I have an attitude to be truthful to you guys and let you know what's going on. In doing so, it's unfortunate to say that the team responsible for executing DC's website failed. Not by any fault of any members, please know that. Everyone dedicated the time the could to the project but the fact remains it's voluntary and at the end of the day bills has to be paid and people must eat so their real job comes first. Respect and thanks to those members that delegated the time they could to carry DC to the point it is. If at any point you want to help, you can easily find me.

With that said, when one door closes, another opens. I realize that a voluntary team isn't the way to get this site up and running so I went out to find a sponsor from the Design Industry. This is what I was doing for the past month. During that time I made good connections and came into contact with the President of Creative Niche. Creative Niche is a company that places creative in fields that suit them, in other words, a job placement agency for Designers.

When I pitched the concept of DC to them, they loved it and was on board. However, the owner of the company has to be on board as well and I not too long received word that we have the full support of Creative Niche.

What does this mean?
Well, we're in the process of looking for a developer to discuss the project with him/her. They've agreed to stand expenses but being a company, they have to follow procedures to make provisions for the support of DC. So by the end of the year, much more details will be outlined along with a developer that will be on board.

Having Creative Niche as a sponsor provides so many possibilities for DC as an organization that it's exciting to think about but I don't know what the future holds. We'll see.

My primary objective right now is to get something online, something simple so I'll see how much I can make that possible. The reason is to show this community has potential not just to our sponsors but to you and me. I'm going to go on the limb and say if anyone is interested in offering their service please feel free to contact me. However, only contact if you're in for the long haul and you feel you can dedicate a fair amount of time in some way possible.

In closing, this one is to personally apologize to *marmar who won the last competition. I will send those dvd's out shortly. Slap me silly for forgetting and I truly am sorry. That's a mistake on my behalf.

So, I've made my apologize, admitted to my mistakes and now I'm back. I'll probably come under some harsh comments but hell, it's all part of it. :)
Thanks.
Damian

Ok, so there's lots of work to get done around DC. We're working on letterheads and business cards since we're going to be dealing professional business people now. We're also working on a brand guide for logo usages so you guys know what can and can't be done with it. So stay tuned.

Thanks.

Kind regards,
